- Cleveland Guardians trade for Alex Cobb from San Francisco Giants
DETROIT — The Guardians addressed their pitching depth issues by acquiring starting pitcher Alex Cobb from the San Francisco Giants .
The Guardians are dealing 19-year-old left-handed pitcher Jacob Bresnahan and a player-to-be-named later, according to a source.
Cobb, 36, was an All-Star last year, posting a 3.87 ERA in 151 2/3 innings. He hasn't pitched in 2024 since undergoing hip surgery, though he has been nearing a return despite multiple setbacks during his rehab. Cobb was on track for a return in May before shoulder irritation pushed any possible return date back several weeks.
Cobb is a former teammate of Guardians manager Stephen Vogt . He also pitched the 2013 American League Wild Card Game when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays .
Monday night, the Guardians acquired outfielder Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals .
Cobb has a base salary of $3.225 million for the 2024 season and can be a free agent this winter.
Cobb owns a career 3.85 ERA across 12 major league seasons, mostly with the Rays.
