The Guardians have sent Myles Straw — and, most importantly, his contract — north of the border.
The Guardians have traded Straw, international signing pool space and cash to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. Both teams have confirmed the deal.
In essence, the Guardians have taken advantage of the race to sign Japanese star Roki Sasaki and used it to offload Straw's contract , which had become a drag on their future financial flexibility.
The Blue Jays are real contenders to sign Sasaki, and the extra international signing pool space could help matters.
Myles Straw traded after spending 2024 season in minor leagues
Straw spent virtually all of 2024 in Triple-A , as his offense had cratered to the point that it couldn't be covered up by his Gold Glove-level defense in center field or his speed on the basepaths.
Straw signed a five-year, $25 million extension before the 2022 season, and his offense immediately fell off. His OPS was under .600 in both 2022 and 2023.
He was set to make $6 million in 2025 without a clear path to a roster spot, aside from maybe a bench role to utilize his defense and speed. He was also set to make a base salary of $7 million in 2026, and he had club options for 2027 and 2028 that included buyouts valued at $1.75 million and $500,000, respectively.
