DETROIT — Oh, you thought the Guardians and Tigers couldn't possibly play more games against each other in a short amount of time? Well buckle up.
The Guardians travel to Detroit to face the Tigers in a short, two-game series at Comerica Park, meaning they will have played each other 10 times in a 23-day span. The Guardians won 8-4 Monday and also added an outfielder in a trade.
Major League Baseball's trade deadline is fast approaching Tuesday night, putting that game in an odd position with so much going on around the league while they're on the field. The Guardians are looking for a few bats and some starting pitching help .
Here's how a busy Monday night unfolded for the Guardians in Detroit.
The Guardians cruised to an 8-4 win in Detroit. Scott Barlow escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and Hunter Gaddis allowed a two-run home run to Wenceel Perez in the ninth inning.
Dillon Dingler, who starred at Jackson High School and Ohio State, finished 1-for-3 in his MLB debut with an RBI, one walk and one strikeout.
Jackson High School graduate Dillon Dingler has secured his first career hit in the major leagues, an RBI double to left field in the seventh inning makes it an 8-1 score.
That hit will also end Tanner Bibee 's day with nobody out in the seventh inning.
Gio Urshela later added a sacrifice fly off of Pedra Avila to cut the Guardians' lead to 8-2.
Jose Ramirez has a multi-homer game tonight, and he's now tied Albert Belle for second on the franchise's all-time home run list.
It's his 25th career multi-homer game and the second this year.
The Guardians lead 8-0.
Bo Naylor crushed a three-run home run in the sixth inning to put the Guardians up 7-0. That was Naylor's seventh home run in what has been a mostly disappointing offensive season.
Tanner Bibee is cruising against the Tigers lineup.
Through five innings, Bibee has allowed only two hits with zero walks, as the Guardians have maintained their 4-0 lead over Detroit.
Jose Ramirez hit his 25th home run of the season in the third inning of Monday night's game, and it was absolutely crushed, traveling an estimated 451 feet.
That is Ramirez's 241st career home run with Cleveland as he continues to chase down some of the biggest names in franchise history .
The Guardians are up 4-0 in the third.
The Guardians struck a deal for Washington Nationals outfielder Lane Thomas during Monday night's game. The team has confirmed the trade.
Beau Brieske took the mound first for the Tigers tonight due to Jack Flaherty being scratched, and it is not going well early on in what will be a bullpen game for Detroit.
Angel Martinez doubled with one out and was followed by Jose Ramirez, who doubled down the right-field line to make it 1-0. Josh Naylor then singled back up the middle to put the Guardians on top 2-0.
Andres Gimenez kept the rally going with a single to right-center, and Jhonkensy Noel added an RBI single to left field to put the Guardians ahead 3-0 and end Brieske's day in the first inning.
And that was all after Steven Kwan drilled a ball deep into the right-center gap, though it was caught.
Below is some pregame information.
Detroit Tigers starter Jack Flaherty has been scratched from his start Monday night. The Tigers will deploy yet another bullpen game.
Flaherty has been in the middle of trade rumors with Tuesday's deadline approaching. It doesn't necessarily mean he has been traded yet, it could simply be a "just in case" situation.
The Tigers promoted catcher Dillon Dingler , a Jackson High School graduate, who's been on a tear at Triple-A Toledo. Dingler was selected in the second round of the 2020 draft . He was among the International League's top hitters this season, and in his last five games at Toledo he had 10 hits, including five homers. He's expected to make his MLB debut tonight against Cleveland.
The Guardians were 4-3 winners Sunday at Philadelphia , enabling them to win two of three games vs. the Phillies. The Phillies (65-40) own the best record in MLB, and beat Cleveland 8-0 Saturday . The Guardians (63-42) have the second-best record in MLB, and also won Friday's series opener 3-1.
It all finally sank in for Travis Bazzana , the top overall draft pick in the draft, when he stepped onto the field at Progressive Field and met Jose Ramirez and others.
The Guardians sent five representatives to the All-Star Game Tuesday night. All five entered the game, including Emmanuel Clase , who earned his second career All-Star save.
Jose Ramirez fared better in his second swing at the Home Run Derby.
The Guardians are entering the deadline in first place in the American League Central and could be buyers ahead of July 30. Here's a breakdown of their top needs and targets .
Major League Baseball released the 2025 schedules Thursday.
The Guardians took Travis Bazzana with the first overall selection in the MLB Draft.
