And since it's the final NFL game for several months, it offers one more chance to place a wager on the outcome . So when breaking down this year's Super Bowl matchup , one of the first questions is: What's the spread?
Oddsmakers expect Super Bowl 58 to be a close game, so that's reflected in the relatively small point spread – also known as the betting line.

What is point spread?
The point spread is the number of points one team is favored over the other.
When bettors wager against the spread, the final score of the game matters more than which team won. The favored team needs to win by more than the point spread in order to "cover" and win the bet. The underdog can still lose the game if it does so by less than the point spread for its bettors to win.

Sportsbooks use the point spread to even out the number of wagers on each team. In most cases, a point spread bet also comes with an odds-based payout on either side (typically -110), which means it takes a wager of $110 to win $100.
Half-points are used in betting lines to avoid ties.
