In Toronto, Rob Ford is known as the city's former mayor, a local politician who was often embroiled in controversy. But in Edmonton, the name Rob Ford will forever be tied to one incredibly kind story.
Mr. Ford was on his way to the Oilers ' preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday with an extra ticket in his pocket, NHL.com reports. Standing on the platform of the Edmonton Light Rail, Ford met a native of Grenada named Imron Andrews, who goes by Andrew.
Ford, who spotted Andrew as he was trying to figure out Edmonton's light-rail system, approached his new friend and offered to help. Andrew was interested in seeing the best the city has to offer when Ford steered him toward Rogers Place, the home of the Edmonton Oilers.
As it turns out, Ford's new friend had never been to a hockey game — Andrew is new to Edmonton after moving from Toronto a few weeks ago. So Ford invited Andrew to the Oilers game, and before long the incredible act of kindness had gone viral.
"I asked him where he wanted to go, and he said 'downtown, to see the sights,'" Ford shared with NHL.com. "You could see Rogers Place from the platform, and I told him 'I'm going there' and asked him if he wanted to go. He said he'd love to, and we got on the train and went."
"My first hockey experience was amazing," Andrew shared with NHL.com. "Full of fun and excitement." Everyone who heard Rob explaining the game to me was super nice and also gave great feedback to me."
Andrew's first live hockey experience was a 6-0 win for the Oilers, who took notice of Ford's kind gesture and shared it on their Twitter account. The team even went the extra mile to make Andrew's first hockey game an unforgettable experience, gifting both Andrew and Ford with a free Oilers jersey.
"The experience was life changing for me," Andrew said. "Now I am in love with hockey. I am very happy with the Oilers for reaching out and giving us those [jerseys]. It shows great love for the fans."
And with that, a new hockey fan was born. In fact, Andrew is so thrilled with his new favourite sport that he wasted little time in updating his Twitter bio to say that he's now an Oilers fan.
