Before the NHL's four divisions battle it out for a little mid-season bonus at the All-Star 3-on-3 tournament, the 44 players selected for the showcase weekend offered a preview of their rather robust skill sets.
Between the Hardest Shot, Fastest Skater and Accurate Shooter events, the NHL All-Star Skills competition on Saturday night in San Jose amazed — or at minimum mildly impressed.
Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting
-
David Pastrnak , Bruins (11.309 seconds)
-
Kris Letang , Penguins (12.693)
-
Drew Doughty , Kings (13.591)
-
Joe Pavelski , Sharks (14.423)
-
Blake Wheeler , Jets (18.585)
-
Nikita Kucherov , Lightning (19.706)
-
Auston Matthews , Maple Leafs (20.151)
-
Kyle Palmieri , Devils (20.209)
Pastrnak went first and nobody was able to touch his quick time. Although he finished seventh, Matthews gained a bunch of new fans in San Jose by pulling off his jersey to reveal the Patrick Marleau one he was wearing underneath. Marleau played 19 seasons for the Sharks before signing with the Maple Leafs in 2017.
SAP NHL Hardest Shot
-
John Carlson , Capitals (102.8)
-
Brent Burns , Sharks (100.6)
-
Seth Jones , Blue Jackets (99.4)
-
Steven Stamkos , Lightning (96.2)
It was an anti-climactic conclusion to the marquee event, as Capitals defender John Carlson wound up for a victory blast after posting the winning score in Round 1.
Enterprise NHL Premier Passer
-
Leon Draisaitl , Oilers (1:09.08)
-
Sebastien Aho, Hurricanes (1:18.50)
-
Ryan O'Reilly, Blues (1:25.89)
-
Keith Yandle , Panthers (1:34.61)
-
Thomas Chabot , Senators (1:40.56)
-
Roman Josi , Predators (1:47.12)
-
Erik Karlsson , Sharks (1:58.24)
-
Mikko Rantanen , Avalanche (2:17.38)
Not many wins this season, but the Oilers have two All-Star Skills competition champions. Leon Draisaitl was the class of probably the most difficult competition at Friday's event.
Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak
-
Henrik Lundqvist , Rangers (12)
-
Andrei Vasilevskiy , Lightning (8)
-
Devan Dubnyk , Wild (7)
-
John Gibson , Ducks (3)
-
Jimmy Howard , Red Wings (2)
-
Pekka Rinne , Predators (2)
-
Braden Holtby , Capitals (2)
Lundqvist made the last 12 saves of the Save Streak event to steal the prize money from Andrei Vasilevskiy after the Lightning netminder looked to have it locked up by stopping the first eight shots he faced in the competition.
Gatorade NHL Puck Control
-
Johnny Gaudreau , Flames (27.04 seconds)
-
Patrick Kane , Blackhawks (28.61)
-
Claude Giroux , Flyers (30.27)

-
John Tavares , Maple Leafs (35.21)
-
Jeff Skinner , Sabres (35.40)
-
Elias Pettersson , Canucks (43.62)
Patrick Kane set a high bar with a silky smooth initial run in the Puck Control event at the NHL All-Star Skills competition, but his time only lasted until it was Johnny Gaudreau's turn. The Flames winger busted the benchmark time to swipe the prize money at the end.
Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater
-
Connor McDavid, Oilers (13.780 seconds)
-
Jack Eichel, Sabres (13.582)
-
Mat Barzal, Islanders (13.780)
-
Miro Heiskanen, Stars (13.914)
-
Elias Pettersson, Canucks (13.930)
-
Cam Atkinson, Blue Jackets (14.152)
-
Kendall Coyne Schofield, Team USA (14.346)
-
Clayton Keller, Coyotes (14.526)
Connor McDavid won the Fastest Skater competition for the third consecutive time, but it was a late entry that delighted the crowd most. Skating first and for Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, U.S. Olympic champion Kendall Coyne Schofield raced around the rink in 14.346 seconds to earn a standing ovation. She eventually placed seventh, beating Clayton Keller.
