A day after a pair of former teammates reunited on the ice for the first time since being injured in the Humboldt Broncos bus accident, Ryan Straschnitzki and Jacob Wassermann took centre stage in front of a packed NHL arena.
Decked out in some fresh Avalanche threads, the two were honoured with individual video tributes before making their way to centre ice and dropping the ceremonial puck(s).
The two took the ice together for the first time since the devastating April crash on Friday night. Wearing Humboldt Broncos jerseys with the word 'survivor' across their backs, they took part in an exhibition sledge hockey game at the University of Denver.
Straschnitzki, who is paralyzed from the chest down, and Wassermann, below the navel, even dropped the gloves during their second game after the two connected for a goal during the day's first contest.
"I figured we needed to hype the crowd up a little bit," said Straschnitzki.
"Oh it was fun. Me and Straz had a good little wrestle," added Wassermann, per the Canadian Press.
The two were injured during the tragic accident that claimed 16 lives when the Saskatchewan-based junior team's bus collided with a tractor-trailer en route to a playoff game.
