Half of the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback room is now certifiably Duval.
The Jaguars signed three players to their practice squad on Wednesday, including former Bishop Kenny star and veteran quarterback John Wolford, who has played for the Los Angeles Rams and been in training camps with the Tampa Bay Bucs and New York Jets after a stellar career at Wake Forest.
He joins Mac Jones (Bolles), Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard and provides more veteran insurance given Lawrence being placed on injured reserve Wednesday afternoon.
Lawrence missed two games last month with a shoulder injury and is in the concussion protocol after a late hit delivered by Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair last Sunday.
"He's been in the league," Jaguars coach Doug Pederson explained about the move. "Somebody that can, with Trevor obviously not practicing now, having that third guy here, especially on the practice squad to help give a look to the defense and for us to put our eyes on him and see what he can do."
In addition, the Jaguars signed punter Mat Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington , and released defensive end Joe Gaziano , cornerback Tyler Hall and offensive guard Jerome Carvin.
Wolford saw game time with Rams
Wolford signed with the Jets as a free agent in the 2018 training camp. He later caught on with the Rams and played in seven games, starting four, from 2020-2022. He threw for 626 yards and one touchdown.
He spent the 2024 training camp with the Bucs and completed 7 of 14 passes for 52 yards in a preseason game against the Jaguars, at EverBank Stadium.
Wolford was cut by the Bucs on Aug. 27.
Wolford set Wake Forest records in passer rating (158.0), yards (3,192), TD passes (29) and total touchdowns (39) as a senior in 2017. He threw for 8,794 yards and 59 touchdowns and ran for 1,120 yards and 10 scores for his career with the Deacons.
Wolford was the Florida Times-Union offensive player of the year in 2013 when he threw for 3,317 yards and 38 TD passes.
Haack, Addington are insurance
Haack and Addington were signed because Pederson said punter Logan Cooke and long snapper Ross Matiscik will both be on the injury report on Wednesday with "lower body" injuries.
"Both guys [Cooke and Matiscik] won't practice today so we just need to get the reps from those positions," Pederson said. "We brought them in to fill that."
Haack has played in 103 games with Miami , Buffalo, Indianapolis , Cleveland and the New York Giants . He has a career average of 39.7 yards per punt. He played college football at Arizona State.
Addington, who was on the Jaguars roster for nine days during the 2023 training camp, has also played for the New England , Miami, Washington and Dallas . He played at Sam Houston State.
