Katie Shumate is the best player on a talented Kent State University women's basketball team .
Now the redshirt senior guard has the requisite accolades to support her standing as one of the better players in the entire Mid-American Conference .
Shumate was voted to both the All-MAC First Team and the MAC All-Defensive Team, the MAC announced Tuesday along with all of its women's hoops awards chosen by the conference's 12 head coaches. Those coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
University of Akron junior forward Reagan Bass was selected to the All-MAC Second Team. She is the Zips' lone representative among the players honored by the MAC.
In addition to Shumate's double-dip, two other Kent State players garnered recognition. Junior forward Jenna Batsch was voted to the All-MAC Third Team, and forward Janae Tyler made the MAC All-Freshman Team.
Shumate has started all 28 games for KSU this season and leads the Golden Flashes with averages of 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds to go along with 1.9 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.7 blocked shots. Last season, she was All-MAC Third Team.
Kent State went 18-10 overall and 13-5 in the MAC during the regular season to earn the third seed in the MAC Tournament. KSU will face sixth-seeded Northern Illinois (15-15, 8-10) on Wednesday night in the first round of the conference tourney at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland.
Akron (11-18, 6-12) didn't qualify for the eight-team MAC Tournament, but Bass still received attention for her individual performances. She averaged 16.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.8 blocked shots this season.
