The Blue Jackets continue making hay at home.
Hosting the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night at sold-out Nationwide Arena, they picked up their fifth straight win on home ice with an exciting 3-2 overtime victory.
Despite losing a 2-1 lead on a goal by Quinton Byfield with 1:05 left in regulation, the Blue Jackets won on Kirill Marchenko 's dazzling OT goal 3:45 into the extra frame, which included him flying through the air like Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr. It was Marchenko's 20thgoal of the season, ending the game in OT just 1:35 after Zach Werenski was denied on a rare overtime penalty shot by Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper .
Werenski and Dante Fabbro scored goals in regulation for the Blue Jackets (24-19-7), who play their next four games on the road in Las Vegas, Utah, Dallas and Buffalo. Phillip Danault and Byfield scored for the Kings (26-14-6).
Each team scored a goal in the first period, starting with Werenski giving the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead at 9:24 with his 16thgoal of the season to extend his franchise-record home point streak to 19 straight games. Danault tied it 1-1, scoring his fourth goal of the season just over three minutes later to cap a long stretch with the puck pinned inside the Columbus blue line.
The game remained tied at 1-1 through an evenly played second period and stayed that way until Fabbro's goal from distance put the Blue Jackets up 2-1 early in the third. The Kings appeared to tie it again on a goal by Alex Laferriere , but a Blue Jackets coaching challenge for a missed offsides play overturned it.
Replays showed Danualt entered the Blue Jackets' zone just ahead of the puck 21 seconds before Laferriere slid it past Merzlikins off a rebound.
