The standoff is on between the Cleveland Browns and their star defensive end, Myles Garrett .
Garrett, 29, has officially requested a trade from the team. The Browns, meanwhile, are digging in their heels and saying they're not interested in trading the 2017 No. 1 overall pick and franchise sack leader.
However, what if the Browns were to submit to Garrett's trade demands? What kind of haul could arguably one of the premier pass rushers in NFL history land on the open market?
There's at least an example to potentially compare this situation to over the last decade. That's the 2018 trade in which the Oakland Raiders sent outside linebacker Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears .
In that deal the Bears gave up two first-round draft picks, a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick. However, Chicago didn't just receive Mack in the deal, but also a second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick.
At the time, Mack was 27. Garrett turned 29 last Dec. 29.
What kind of draft picks would a Myles Garrett trade get the Cleveland Browns ?
So where does the asking price begin for the Browns? Here are some thoughts:
-
At least two first-round picks
-
At least one second- and/or third-round pick
-
A day three draft pick
What kind of player could the Cleveland Browns get in a Myles Garrett trade?
The asking price, obviously, could change depending on what additional picks the Browns might include along with Garrett, as was the case with the Mack deal. There could also be a chance compensation is altered if the return includes a player.
The possibility of a player being involved in the return for Cleveland could help some of its own roster issues. What are the top three positions at which the Browns could potentially upgrade, possibly significantly, with this deal?
-
Quarterback: This could help them potentially pull an aging starter, such as the Los Angeles Rams ' Matthew Stafford
-
Wide receiver: The Browns have been looking for more help at that spot. Garrett could be the ticket to getting a real complementary piece with Jerry Jeudy
-
Offensive line: The Browns need help at offensive tackle right now. Could they flip Garrett for a starting left tackle?
