Heading into this evening's action, here are the day's top NHL storylines:
Stars CEO calls Seguin and Benn 'horse-sh*t' in critical tirade
With a mediocre record of 19-16-3 the Dallas Stars are not where they want to be at the moment. Their CEO Jim Lites isn't shy on offering his two cents on the situation either. Lites revealed that he constantly gets texts simply saying "WTF" from team owner Tom Gaglardi and proceeded to go on a tirade about his team, and specifically its biggest stars: Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn . Winnipeg Jets D Dustin Byfuglien fined for slashing
The NHL has fined Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien for slashing Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau . The league announced the $2,500 fine on Friday. [More]
Backes to have hearing for hit on Devils' Coleman
Bruins forward David Backes is in hot water, again. The 34-year-old will have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety for an illegal check to the head on Devils forward Blake Coleman on Thursday night. It's a silly thing for anybody to do, but Backes should know better considering he's battled concussions over the last few seasons. [More]

Johnny Gaudreau beats the Jets singlehandedly, is very good
Johnny Gaudreau's ability to take over a game on his own and singlehandedly punish an opponent's net was on full display on Thursday. Gaudreau, or Hockey (whichever last name you prefer), was money in the Flames' first post-Christmas contest, notching a hat trick with his 17th, 18th and 19th tallies of the season — including a couple gems as Calgary's top unit of Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm was sizzling against the Jets on Thursday. What will the Wild do without Matt Dumba ?
The Wild have been one of the least-injured teams in the league this year, only having recently surpassed Toronto as being the team with the fewest man-games lost to injury. But now Matt Dumba is hurt — has been since Dec. 15 — and it appears as though he'll be on the shelf for three whole months. That puts you in late March, right around the time everyone hits the 72-game threshold. And the problem is that Dumba has arguably been their best defenseman this year. [More]

Who is set to see their fortunes change in 2019?
Instead of reviewing the top under-owned players, you'll find a few folks who overachieved/underachieved to date but are trending to have their fortunes reversed in the New Year. Anyone who missed significant time due to injury won't be included, since that would obviously be reflected in the stats. Who will rebound in the second half? And who will fall back to Earth? Game of the night
Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers
The preseason feels like it was ages ago, but don't be surprised if the Florida Panthers haven't completely forgotten about it. On Friday night, the Panthers and Montreal Canadiens will go head-to-head for the first time since Max Domi split Aaron Ekblad open with a sucker punch in September. Consider this matter far from closed. Even though Ekblad and head coach Bob Boughner insist that the incident is ancient history, it would be more shocking if Domi didn't have to answer than if he did. That's just hockey culture. People don't forget until they drop the gloves. Then everyone can move on. Habs goalie Carey Price , who won the Vezina Trophy in 2015 as the NHL's best netminder, will miss the game because of a lower-body injury. [Full preview] [Follow on Yahoo Sports]
