The 2024-2025 college basketball season is quickly slipping away from the North Carolina Tar Heels, who are currently on life support as they they and keep their slim NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
UNC started the season with plenty of hope: returning reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis , landing 5-star recruits Drake Powell and Ian Jackson, plus adding sharpshooter Cade Tyson through the transfer portal.
As of Tuesday, February 4, North Carolina is currently 13-10 overall and 6-5 in the ACC. The Tar Heels' next matchup comes on Saturday, Feb. 8 at home against Pitt, the same program it lost to in Pennsylvania recently.
Though UNC essentially has to play picture-perfect basketball if it wants to continue playing deep into March, UNC does have one positive going for it.
RJ Davis, who currently leads North Carolina with 17.3 points per game, was recently named one of 10 finalists for the Jerry West Award . This award is annually given to the top shooting guard in college basketball.
You likely recognize another Jerry West Award Finalist: Caleb Love , the former Tar Heels who currently averages 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for the Arizona Wildcats. Love transferred out of Chapel Hill after UNC's 2022-2023 campaign, when it missed the NCAA Tournament after being the Preseason Number One.
Though not playing at his 2023-2024 level, Davis still continues to show flashes of why he's the Tar Heels' go-to guy. Most recently, Davis showcased his takeover ability during North Carolina's close, 102-96 victory over Boston College with seven overtime points.
