With a 12-5 record, a top-two defensive rating, and a top-five overall net rating , the Houston Rockets have been one of the NBA's best teams in its young 2024-25 regular season.
Yet, they aren't doing it in the conventional way with one or two superstar players. In fact, as things currently stand, no individual player is even averaging 20 points per game for the Rockets.
Instead, for head coach Ime Udoka, it's a diversified approach that seems to be paying dividends. In Friday's blowout home win over Portland, it was veteran forward Dillon Brooks who led the way on offense with a season-high 28 points and a career-high-tying six 3-pointers.
In postgame comments, Brooks — who is well respected in the locker room as a veteran leader — opened up regarding Houston's collective approach, which reflects the diversity of its options and the reality that it doesn't rely exclusively on one or two players.
One thing that we say to each other is, 'Sometimes you, sometimes me, always us.' So it could be JG's [ Jalen Green ] night, my night, Fred's [VanVleet] night , it could be Jabari's [Smith Jr.] night. We play through those guys... and Alpi [ Alperen Sengun ] plays his game every night.
If we buy into that slogan, we'll be really good.
The next opportunity for Houston to put that slogan to the test comes Saturday night with a home rematch against the Trail Blazers . Tipoff at Toyota Center, where the Rockets will be wrapping up a three-game homestand, is at 7:00 p.m. Central.
