Both the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues will be without a regular when the Stanley Cup Final shifts to Missouri for Game 3 on Saturday night.
The NHL's Department of Player Safety handed down a one-game suspension to Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist for his heavy hit from behind on Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk , who was not cleared to travel with the team after suffering a suspected head injury.
Grzelcyk put himself in a vulnerable and dangerous position on the play, but Sundqvist is certainly responsible for the injury by carrying his momentum through the back of the Boston defender with definite intent.
Here's the collision:
While the Bruins were no doubt campaigning for sanctioning by revealing soon after Boston's Game 2 loss that the defenseman had entered concussion protocol, the one-game ban on Sundqvist hardly equates. While Grzelcyk operates out of a depth role like Sundqvist, his impact overshadows that of the Blues' bottom-line forward.
Grzlecyk routinely feasts on lesser competition out of the Boston bottom pairing, and was able to accomplish the same in Game 1 by finishing the game at over 70 percent possession at even strength. He also contributes to both sides of the special teams equation, which has separated the Bruins in these playoffs.
