You can never have too many McGuires on one coaching staff, right?
The Texas Tech football team announced Wednesday the hiring of Garret McGuire as the team's new running backs coach. McGuire is the son of head coach Joey McGuire.
"We're excited to add Garret to our staff here at Texas Tech," Joey McGuire said in a news release. "He knows the culture we have established and is familiar with our offensive philosophy, making him a natural fit to our staff. He will also be instrumental in our recruiting efforts, especially in the state of Texas."

Garret McGuire is coming off a two-year stint serving as wide receivers coach for Nebraska under his father's old boss Matt Rhule, who coached Garret at Baylor from 2017-20. The young McGuire also followed Rhule to the Carolina Panthers after his playing days, serving as an offensive assistant during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
The Cornhuskers signed recruiting classes that ranked in the Top 25 each of the past two years with Garret playing a key role.
At the age of 25, Garret is one of the youngest assistant coaches in the country. He was named to the 2024 class of the AFCA 35 Under 35 list and the 30-Under-30 ranking of young assistants compiled by 247Sports in 2023.
Associate head coach Kenny Perry previously served as the running backs coach. Perry will still serve as special teams coordinator and remain in the offensive staff room, according to the release.

During media availability on Sunday following the announcement of Texas Tech heading to the Liberty Bowl to take on Arkansas later this month, Joey McGuire confirmed he was in the process of hiring his son. The role had not been determined at that time.
"He will bring a lot of energy," Joey said Sunday. "He'll rank as one of the top recruiters in the nation off the class they just signed. I'm hoping so (to hire him), because it definitely will help us."
