The Texas Tech football team couldn't keep pace with the high-powered offense of Shedeur Sanders , Travis Hunter and the 24th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes in a 41-27 loss on Saturday in Jones AT&T Stadium.
The Red Raiders (6-4, 4-3) mounted an early 13-0 lead but the offense sputtered the rest of the way. Each comeback attempt was thwarted by Colorado sacks and takeaways that left the sold-out home crowd frustrated enough to toss more tortillas than necessary throughout the game.
Fans toss tortillas, Texas Tech football touchdown to start game
The Red Raiders came out of the gates swinging on offense, utilizing a 35-yard connection between Behren Morton and Josh Kelly to set up a 17-yard touchdown from Morton to Jalin Conyers. This prompted many more tortillas tossed onto the field than in a regular game, at first in celebration.
Gino Garcia added a pair of field goals to make it 13-0 through one quarter to the delight of the tortilla-tossing Texas Tech fans
And then what happened?
As it has throughout the season, Tech's offense started to stall in the second quarter, punting on three consecutive possessions that generated 13 yards on 12 plays.
Even J'Koby Williams' 57-yard kickoff return with 30 seconds left couldn't generate points. Tech gained four yards on three plays and Garcia missed his first field goal of the season, this one from 53 yards.
Still, Tech had a 13-10 lead going into halftime.
Red Raiders get Tahj Brooks the all-time rushing record
The run game did not work in the first half, but Texas Tech kept trying to force the issue. Tahj Brooks entered the game 121 yards from Tech's all-time rushing record, and the Red Raiders were going for it.
Brooks broke off a few long runs in the second half and officially became the program's all-time leading rusher with a 25-yard run.
Colorado speed throttles Tech D
Looking for shots downfield wasn't working for Colorado, so Shedeuer Sanders settled for quick bubble screens, letting the speedy receivers race past a secondary already playing too far back. That led to La'Johntay Webster and Travis Hunter touchdowns and put the Red Raiders on their heels.
Joey McGuire pleads with Tech fans
While Colorado captured control of the game, Tech fans began using their tortillas more frequently and Deion Sanders was not too happy about it. Joey McGuire had to get on the live stadium mic and plead with fans to stop.
