Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will not play for at least the next four games after being placed on injured reserve Wednesday afternoon. With five games left in the season, Lawrence is likely out for the remainder.
Lawrence sustained a concussion against the Houston Texans last week after Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair dove at the QB late on a slide with 4:20 remaining in the first half of the game. Al-Shaair was suspended for three games due to his past actions and the hit on Lawrence.
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday that Lawrence remained in the concussion protocol.
OUCH: Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence banged up, 'frustrated, disappointed' in loss
Lawrence sustained a left shoulder injury in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles . He missed the next two games of the season before returning to the field after the team's Week 12 bye.
The Jaguars will go with backup QB Mac Jones for at least the next four games, barring an injury or benching and likely for the remainder of the year as Jacksonville finishes out a disappointing season.
Lawrence finishes his year completing 60.6% of his passes for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions through 10 games.
Lawrence signed a five-year contract worth $275 million in new money with $142 million guaranteed at signing and $200 million in total guarantees in June.
Trevor Lawrence injury history: QB has had six injuries in calender year
Lawrence has sustained multiple injuries since suffering a knee injury against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6 last year. He sustained an ankle injury in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals , a concussion against the Ravens in Week 15 and a right shoulder injury in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers .
This season, Lawrence sustained a left, non-throwing shoulder injury and a concussion, bringing his total injury count to six since Week 6 last year.
Pederson spoke about Lawrence's injury history during Monday's press conference noting that the QB plays the game in a manner that he appreciates.
"The quarterback position is going to get hit and he's a mobile guy and he's going to run and he was in a position yesterday to protect himself. He was going to slide and get down, which he did. You have conversations every year like, 'Hey, OK, we've got to do a better job of sliding, better job of getting out of bounds. We've got to throw the ball away," Pederson said.
"Just live to punt, live to play another down.' All those different conversations come up. You don't like to see it with your quarterback, the amount of injuries. But at the same time, he bounces right back. He's tough. He's tough mentally, he's tough physically. He does a great job getting himself ready to go again when the time comes, and he definitely wants to be out there with his teammates."
Lawrence said last week that surgery could remain on the table for his injured left shoulder, an AC joint sprain.
