- Tyler Seguin signs reasonable mega extension with Stars
Tyler Seguin cashed in.
Disappointed no longer.
A couple weeks after expressing some mild discontent with the Dallas Stars over the lack of movement on his next contract, Tyler Seguin has agreed to an eight-year mega extension worth $78.8 million.

Perhaps we can chalk up the delay to the ideation of a creative spin used to announce the news:
At a shade under $10 million, it's a reasonable cap hit for the Stars and an obvious coup for Seguin. Just seven players are scheduled to make in excess of eight figures for the upcoming season and Seguin will come in just under that threshold when his current contract expires at the end of this year.
The NHL's sixth-leading scorer since his trade to Dallas five years ago and scoring at essentially a point per game for his entire term with the Stars, Seguin has vastly outperformed his current $5.75-million salary and deserves to be paid in the upper-echelon of scoring forwards.

Jamie Benn is one of only five players with a stronger per-game scoring rate over the last five seasons, and the Stars now have both locked up through 2024-25.
Seguin, now 26, projects to be rewarded for what he's done on the back half of his new contract, as it's unlikely that he'll be able to extend that production throughout the life of his freshly-inked deal. But for the immediate term, Seguin will hardly be overpaid like most superstars who flirt with unrestricted free agency.
Dallas now has its core of Seguin, Benn, Alexander Radulov , John Klingberg and Ben Bishop signed through the next four seasons for just short of $35 million. That gives Jim Nill upwards of $45 million-plus to play with as his team aims to construct a contender with his foundation firmly in place.
