CLEMSON — Clemson football dropped from No. 12 to No. 17 in the US LBM Coaches Poll released Sunday.
The Tigers (9-3, 7-1 ACC) received 457 points and no first-place votes. They are the third-highest ranked ACC team, finishing behind No. 7 SMU (977 points) and No. 14 Miami (646). They placed ahead of No. 25 Syracuse (108).
Clemson was upset by in-state rival South Carolina on Saturday, losing 17-14 at Memorial Stadium. Despite their loss, the Tigers will play in the ACC championship against SMU in Charlotte on Dec. 7 (8 p.m. ET, ABC) at Bank of America Stadium because Syracuse defeated Miami in Week 14. The winner of the ACC title game will get an automatic bid and a possible first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.
ACC teams that did not make the coaches top 25 poll but received votes were Duke (39 points), Louisville (18) and Georgia Tech (2).
Oregon remained at No. 1 in the poll, earning 1,325 points and 53 first-place votes. Texas rose to No. 2 with 1,272 points.
The weekly poll is voted on by a panel of coaches chosen by random draw. Voters submit a top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place worth 24, and so on down to one point for 25th, according to USA TODAY Sports.
