Don Cherry has a brand, and whether you love him or hate him you have to respect that he never wavers from it no matter how absurd he makes himself look.
All in the name of our entertainment. What a selfless guy.
Among his most notable polarizing traits is his inability — or intentional unwillingness — to correctly pronounce even mildly "difficult" last names of prominent players, especially those of European or French-Canadian decent.
Grapes' latest victim? Montreal Canadiens star rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi , who had his name completely gassed on Saturday's edition of Coach's Corner.
Packeeyawney? Pockinnonny? Packasammy? Poor Finnish name didn't stand a chance against this prominent Canadian Hockey Man.
Kotkaniemi (kot-kuh-nee-EM-ee) shouldn't feel too bad, though, as he joins a long, long list of NHL players possessing both easy and difficult pronunciations to have their name absolutely demolished by the Hockey Night In Canada "analyst."
I believe congratulations are now in order for Kotkaniemi who, despite already proving himself in with 20 points through his first 42 games as an 18-year-old, just officially became a true NHLer after that Coach's Corner segment.
First NHL game? Check. First goal? Check. Having your family name completely and utterly shredded by Don Cherry? Check. He's now banged out all of the rites of passage needed to officially become a professional hockey player.
Welcome to the show, kid.
