EPA Gives Model Y L Premium AWD More Range Than Tesla's Own Configurator

Tesla appears to have underestimated one of its own EVs. The Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive has received its official EPA range figures, and both available wheel configurations can travel farther on paper than Tesla initially predicted.

The difference isn't enormous, yet EV range improvements are usually welcome when they arrive without a hardware change or price increase. Even buyers choosing the Model Y L's larger 20-inch wheels come out several miles ahead of the figure originally advertised.

Tesla watcher Sawyer Merritt highlighted the updated figures on X, showing an EPA-rated 332 miles for the Model Y L Premium AWD with its standard 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels. Tesla had previously estimated that configuration at 325 miles.

The optional 20-inch Uberhelix wheels receive a similar bump, climbing from Tesla's initial 320-mile estimate to an EPA rating of 328 miles. Those numbers also produce an unusual comparison with the smaller, two-row Model Y.

Tesla Was Off By Up To Eight Miles

With the standard 19-inch wheels, the official rating adds seven miles to Tesla's original estimate, an increase of roughly 2.2 percent. Selecting the 20-inch wheels results in an eight-mile improvement over the company's earlier figure.

Tesla has since updated its configurator to display the EPA estimates, so the discrepancy was between the company's pre-certification figures and the final federal ratings. The Model Y L can also reportedly replenish as much as 172 miles of range in 15 minutes under suitable fast-charging conditions, up from Tesla's previous 164-mile claim.

Perhaps the bigger surprise is how little the optional wheels affect range. Moving from 19s to 20s costs the Model Y L only four EPA-rated miles, leaving the larger-wheel version at 328 miles.

The Bigger Model Y Actually Goes Farther

The standard-length Model Y is EPA-rated for 327 miles with 19-inch wheels, meaning the larger six-seat Model Y L beats it by five miles despite its stretched dimensions and additional seating.

The difference becomes much greater with 20-inch wheels. A regular Model Y Premium AWD drops to 303 miles, losing 24 miles compared with its 19-inch configuration, while the Model Y L's range falls by only four miles.

That means a Model Y L riding on 20-inch wheels still has one mile of additional EPA-rated range compared with a standard Model Y Premium AWD on its smaller 19s. For buyers who prefer the appearance of the larger wheels, that's an unusually small efficiency penalty.

Tesla Made Several Changes To Improve Efficiency

The Model Y L isn't simply a standard Model Y with extra bodywork added behind the rear seats. Tesla made aerodynamic changes to the longer vehicle, including an integrated rear spoiler molded into the body, while reports indicate it also uses a slightly larger battery pack.

Tesla has said the redesigned spoiler alone contributes around 15 miles of range. The company also incorporated a three-zone climate-control system into the six-seat model, helping manage comfort throughout its larger cabin.

The final result makes the Model Y L Premium AWD the longest-range Model Y currently offered in the U.S. With 332 EPA-rated miles available, Tesla's larger and heavier six-seater has managed the unusual trick of stretching both its body and its official driving range.
