AXA divides its available policies into single- and multi-trip (annual) options. These are the single-trip plans:
-
Explorer OnTrip:This option makes sense for last-minute trips and same-day travel. It has no trip cancellation coverage, but you can take advantage of up to $2,500 in trip interruption protection.
-
North America Explorer:You might consider this for domestic travel itineraries, road trips, and trips with pets. The medical coverage isn't as high as other plans, but that's likely because it's assumed you already have your own health insurance if you're traveling domestically.
-
Explorer Standard:This is a low-cost plan for most vacations, including international travel. It includes trip cancellation and interruption protection, and emergency medical coverage. However, the overall coverage limits are lower than those of other plans geared toward international travel.
-
Explorer Select:This plan can work for any international trip, though it could make particular sense for family trips and cruises. The coverage limits are much higher with Explorer Select compared to Explorer Standard.
-
Explorer Elite:This is AXA's most expensive single-trip plan and could be a great option for high-end vacations and senior travelers. It offers the highest available coverage limits and includes a few additional benefits, such as pet kennel and search-and-rescue coverage, that not every plan provides.
These are the annual plans:
-
Explorer Annual:This plan makes sense for short getaways and value-focused trips. It's the least expensive of the annual plans, meaning it also has the lowest coverage limits.
-
Explorer Annual Plus:This mid-tier annual plan can be a great option for active travelers and international trips. The coverage limits are higher, giving you more protection while you travel.
-
Explorer Annual Max:The most expensive AXA annual plan, offering the highest coverage limits. It may make the most sense for frequent travelers and high-value trips.

For these premiums, we used the AXA Travel Insurance website to populate quotes for various plans. We input the following generic information for the single-trip plans: a 35-year-old traveler from Iowa with a two-week itinerary and a total trip cost of $5,000. We used the same information for the annual plans, except for the two-week itinerary and the total trip cost.
How does this compare to other travel insurance plan costs?
| Provider |
Cost range |
|---|---|
| AAA travel insurance |
$195 to $312 |
| Allianz Travel Insurance |
$46 to $510 |
| IMG Travel Insurance |
$40.69 to $282 |
| Seven Corners |
$49.50 to $690 |
| Travel Insured International |
$94 to $331 |
| WorldTrips |
$32.10 to $236 |
AXA Travel Insurance prices fall within a similar range to competitor premiums, though the Explorer Annual Max plan is one of the most expensive we've seen.
One item to note is that some competitor pricing seems much lower at the bottom of the range, but that's only because those policies don't include trip cancellation coverage. You can do the same with AXA Travel Insurance, and the premiums would be equally as inexpensive.
