The View Lounge

One of the few sky view spots still open, this bar located on the San Francisco Marriott's 39th floor, offers occasional live jazz, blues, and R&B. Opened in 1989, this bar does not take reservations and compensates for its high prices, with its truly unique views of SF. Patrons can enjoy craft beers and select wines, along with a variety of delicious small plates that include items like the Smoked Duck Breat Pastrami, Spicy Seafood Cocktail and Braised Pork Belly. The View Lounge is an ideal place to enjoy a night of drinking in SoMa.

Laszlo

This bar is connected to the acclaimed Foreign Cinema and is located in the rare little strip of bourgeois bars and restaurants in the Mission. The industrial-chic interior borders on being LA-esque, as do the crowds. Drinks are good (although pricey for the neighborhood), as is the service and music. Check the website for theme nights and DJ schedule. Come for dinner and a wall-projected movie, stay for the bourgeois booze.

Pied Piper San Francisco

Just like our very own Pied Piper of Hamelin, this bar in the Palace Hotel, with its plush and mystic quality, draws businessmen as well as the hip crowd. The venue, which includes a long mahogany bar, marble tables and mosaic-tiled floors, reflects an old-world charm with a subtle contemporary feel and was named for the Maxfield Parrish mural of the Pied Piper which adorns one wall. The menu offers a delicious variety of upscale pub food, which includes Crab Nachos, Smoked Salmon Pizza and Chicken Club Sandwiches. The popular Blueberry Cheesecake along with a glass of one of their fine wines are perfect to end the course. Named one of the World's Seven Greatest Bars, this is the place to relax after work and soak in the charming ambiance.

Vesuvio Cafe

Vesuvio's colorful, stained-glass windows provide an unbeatable second-story view of the vibrant Broadway and Columbus intersection. Guests who want to drink where Kerouac & Co—"mad ones"—once did, come here to feel the echo of the 1950s' literary history. As colorful as the decor is, the ambiance can be described as whimsical and inspirational, with old classics playing in the background and arty walls adding more allure to the interior. You will usually find a mixed bag of writers, artists and tourists lounging around here. It's a good place to linger over drinks while soaking in the establishment's eclectic and neighborly charm.
