School of Rock

School of Rock is different from traditional music education programs. Our patented and proven School of Rock Method™ has taught hundreds of thousands of students around the world to play music. We combine one-on-one guitar, bass, keyboard, drums and singing instruction with group rehearsals and live performances, teaching students how to play together as a band. Our version of recitals are real rock shows at real venues in front of live audiences. This style of teaching builds lasting musical proficiency, boosts confidence, increases creativity, improves socialization skills, and allows students to work together as a band. When you join School of Rock, not only will you become a musician, but you'll be part of a close-knit community of passionate musicians and music lovers. We welcome students of all ages and experience levels.

Matthew Montfort's Guitar Instruction

I have been offering online lessons since 2011 to students around the world. But I found new ways of working when all of my students went online in 2020 due to the pandemic. For duets, I developed a method using a metronome and my rhythm skills to offset the latency so that the student experiences the duet as if it was in person. While online lessons are more convenient and very effective, I also offer in person lessons to work on ensemble skills at student's homes and parks in the North Bay, and my soon to be opened recording studio in Cloverdale. I offer guitar, bass, ukulele, sitar, charango, mandolin, and other plucked instrument lessons, record production, music theory, repertoire and rhythm training for all instruments. I have several electric, steel string, and classical guitars available for new students. I cover all styles, including rock, jazz, folk, classical, flamenco, and other world music forms. To enhance rhythm skills necessary for all performers, I offer group and individual classes on the captivating rhythms of Africa, Bali, and India that require no instruments. I work with students of all ages, from young children to senior citizens. I help students reach their own personal goals in music, whatever they may be, through a lesson plan customized to the student's needs. I'm very patient, and my students have fun and make progress towards their goals. Some have gone on to have careers in music, and for many, music is a wonderful oasis in their lives.
