Part gallery, part studio space, the McColl Center is dedicated to two noble goals: providing local artists with a healthy and inspiring environment in which to work and encouraging the surrounding community to become more aware of the art world. To these ends, the McColl Center functions as a traditional gallery as well as sponsoring community-building events such as “Open Studio Saturdays,” where artists' workspaces are open to the public. Artists-in-residence ply their trades throughout the facility, working with everything from pencils and paints to clay and cement, neon light, heavy metals, and much more. Housed in a renovated 1920s-era church, the Center itself is quite striking.

From 1836 to around 1861, this Federal-style building served as one of the first branches of the United States Mint. During the Depression, it was saved from demolition through a community effort and became North Carolina's first art museum. Today, it houses one of the major collections of American, European, African, and Asian artwork, along with ceramics, photography, maps, and contemporary art. There are daily tours, lectures, art classes, and festivals that invite the public to come and enjoy the exhibitions. With an extensive collection of over 72,000 items and a building rich in history, this museum is a must-see for any art lover! Trish Boyles is an award-winning mixed media artist. Her work has been featured in exhibitions and shows across the Carolinas, and she offers mixed media and collage art classes in Studio 17 at Hart Witzen Gallery and Studios. Trish also owns Sanders & Boyles, a tax and accounting firm specializing in serving self-employed folks, small businesses, and self-sustaining non-profits.
