Museum of the Desert Southwest showcases the local and regional history of West Texas. Established in 1980, this museum has plenty of exhibits and artifacts such as an old wagon which makes you think about the life of the pioneers on the ranch. There is a whiskey still which is from the era of prohibition and a medical device from the earlier days. A museum which takes you back to the era of cowboys and the old west, this place should not be missed.

Permian Basin Petroleum Museum

In operation for more than a decade, the Petroleum Museum documents the discovery of petroleum, other energy sources, as well as the journey of petroleum over the years. Visitors to the museum can understand and learn more about everything from Permian reefs and the petroleum industry, to alternate energy sources like solar and hydro power. Replicas of natural features, various dioramas and a number of hands-on exhibits dispense interesting information. Visitors can also participate in a fun, game-based permanent exhibit called Risk and Reward, which requires them to overcome obstacles as they 'drill for oil'. 

Haley Memorial Library and History Center

Unlike any other library, the Haley Memorial Library and History Center is truly a destination for historians and writers interested in the West. This research facility contains volumes found nowhere else detailing life in the West for early settlers. A number of different authors and historians have used the research center to add detailed and accurate information to stories or accounts. So even if you aren't planning on writing a novel anytime soon, you should still stop in to learn a little something about the history of the west that helped to shape the psyche of the United States.
