Fiore's Bakery

Fiore's Bakery is one of the best in Jamaica Plain. Swing by for a reliably good coffee and cookie to take out and enjoy a stroll in the nearby Arboretum. The cakes here are tasty as well as beautiful, and the baguettes are crusty on the outside and light and tender on the inside. Also recommended are the pecan sticky rolls, spinach bagel, cupcakes, and the chocolate molten cake. With the recent introduction of soups and pizza at lunch, Fiore's now also serves one of the best affordable light lunches around. The limited seating can be cramped on weekends, but on weekdays you can sit undisturbed for hours. The restaurant also features a vegan menu.

Hi-Rise Bread Company

The Hi-Rise Bread Company is a very popular Harvard Square establishment. Located in the historic yellow clapboard Blacksmith House, the bakery serves up some amazing goods with top-rate breads, pies and cookies. Tasty treats include the cranberry crumble tart and lemon curd cake. The bakery also serves sandwiches and soups and does a brisk takeout business. Prices are a little high but are well worth it.

Kupel's Bakery

Located just outside of Coolidge Corner, this bakery has a giant assortment of baked goods, including some kosher products. The half-moon pastries are scrumptious, light and airy with a sweet frosting that melts in your mouth. The filling chocolate chip cookies have huge chunks of chocolate which stretch as you pull the cookie apart. Sit at the counter and enjoy a great snack with a soda or juice; it is crowded and a little pricey because this bakery is very good at what it does.

Grendel's Den Restaurant & Bar

Grendel's Den is one of the best deals in the neighborhood. With a solid selection of beers and basic menu, Grendel's was made for happy hour: half-price food between Monday to Wednesday 5pm to 7:30pm or Thursday to Sunday 9pm-11:30pm . For a splurge, try their dark 'n stormy: ginger beer and serious rum. Even better—they have hard cider on tap. The food? Unremarkable, but definitely good enough to return. In nice weather, aim for the patio, but be aware the half-price deal is only available inside.
