James Mears' venture into the automotive world started in the 1960s with Modern Chevrolet. In 1968, he became general manager of Montgomery Volkswagen, which he left to start Mears Motors with his wife, Kay, in 1971. James and Kay ran the business at the beginning with Bob and Andy helping out after school, out of a Burger Chef building on 43rd and Q. After many successful years in the used car business, the family decided to commit to a new car franchise. Bob had been working at Plains Mazda for a couple of years and had some insight about the Mazda product. In 1975, the Mazda franchise was purchased and the Mears family has never looked back. A few years later, the business was moved into the old Plains Mazda building on 19th and Ave L. Business was great, and with all that new space they were looking for more franchises.
