TIS provides certified and pre-certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for most situations. Interpreters are often called anything from translator, hearing impaired interpreter or translator, deaf interpreter, interpreter for the deaf, deaf translator, and sometimes even teacher. Such verbiage can cause confusion as to the interpreter's role in any given situation. Navigating sign language, sight translation of documents, spoken English, Deaf culture, and mainstream American culture can be tricky. Even with those challenges in mind, interpreters provided by TIS meet stringent background qualifications and have expertise in the aforementioned areas. All of the interpreters from Townsend Interpreting Services have graduated with an Associates of Applied Science in Interpreter Preparation with honors and most have completed, or are pursuing, a Bachelors of Communication with an emphasis either in Community Interpreting or Educational Interpreting.
