My name is Abdi Ismael, and I’m the owner and operator of Elevate Lawns, a small local landscaping company based in Minneapolis and serving the entire Twin Cities area. I wanted to share a story that highlights entrepreneurship, immigration, and skilled trade work in our community. I am Somali, born abroad and raised here in Minnesota, and I truly believe I am living the American Dream through building this business. I started Elevate Lawns when I was just 14 years old. At the time, I was eager to work but struggled to find a job. I did not know much yet, but I knew I was willing to work hard, so I picked up a rake and started knocking on doors in my neighborhood. By 17, I was working at Home Depot, hauling hundreds of bags of mulch each day and talking with contractors who came through the store. That is where I met Porter, who encouraged me and helped me take the next step toward starting my own landscaping business. Beyond the business itself, community involvement is very important to us. We currently have 60 five star Google reviews, 20 video testimonials on our website, and a local Facebook following of over 1700 people. We also host and promote community events where we give away free nutrition shakes to support health and wellness and free coffee to bring people together.
