Home Mission Statement The John Winthrop School for Young Children believes in the singularity and wonder of childhood. The school's mission is to foster the social, emotional and cognitive development of young children. Teachers facilitate the learning process by providing children with opportunities to explore many developmentally appropriate activities and materials, and by allowing them to make decisions in accordance with their own interests. John Winthrop School provides a safe and loving environment where children feel free to explore and learn about themselves, others and the world around them. The school fosters parental growth and education through family-oriented events and educational opportunities, and encourages and supports the continued professional development of its staff. The Early Childhood Learning Lab (ECLL) is an open enrollment preschool located in the Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. Its purposes are to provide an exemplary play-based education for children ages 2.9 to 5 years, and to serve as a pre-practicum site for Boston University's Early Childhood Education majors. We plan our curriculum based on our observations of what interests children. Insects, tools, plants, pets, and food preparation are among the many topics that have been investigated by children and teachers in the ECLL.
