University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries provides a range of books, journals, videos, databases, digital collections and other reading materials. It operates the Marston Science Library, which houses reference materials on various subjects that include agriculture, engineering, mathematics and statistics, and biological, chemical and physical sciences. The system also maintains music, journalism and communications, and architecture and fine arts libraries. University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries has a bookstore that sells a variety of books, magazines, records and maps. Its Smathers Library maintains a Latin American collection. The system s libraries are equipped with computers, printers, accessibility software, laptops, scanners and video players. Its libraries provide interlibrary loan programs.
Located in Gainesville, the Library East is also known as the Smathers Library. Exquisitely-designed by architect William A. Edwards, the library stands as a striking structure. It was opened in October 1926, and post World War II, a major input was added by Guy Fulton, the Florida Board of Control architect. The library is home to a large number of humanities and social sciences collections. Via mobile shelving, books and reference journals are kept from the first floor to the third. With great architectural features and an array of library resources, the Library East has gained a historically-significant position.
