County Engineer s Office is responsible for more than 300 miles of blacktop roads, over 40 miles of gravel roads and nearly 250 bridges. The department also deals with the disposal of municipal solid waste. It is operated by the Cowley County, Kan., which additionally manages health, emergency management, and management and geographic information systems departments. The county is comprised of more than 25 townships and over eight cities, including Arkansas City, Atlanta, Burden, Cambridge, Dexter, Parkerfield, Udall and Winfield, Kan. Founded in 1867, it also maintains county cemeteries.
