Considered one of the first African American churches built in Charleston, the Central Baptist Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed in a Gothic and Italianate architectural style and completed in 1893, one of its greatest features are the Medieval Florentine folk art murals depicting biblical scenes. Located between Coming and St. Philip Streets, the two-story church has a small parking area on the side. There have been additions and modifications over the years. Dating back to August 1995, the Providence Baptist Church is the first-of-its-kind congregation in the city of Providence. Following the religion with complete faith is what the Church preaches; and this is done by means of holding regular prayer services, Sunday school, youth gatherings, missions and other community services. The Church is also an active member of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
