Considered one of the first African American churches built in Charleston, the Central Baptist Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed in a Gothic and Italianate architectural style and completed in 1893, one of its greatest features are the Medieval Florentine folk art murals depicting biblical scenes. Located between Coming and St. Philip Streets, the two-story church has a small parking area on the side. There have been additions and modifications over the years. Citadel Square Baptist Church welcomes people from all walks of life and all age groups. Various performances by the 'JOY Choir' and other events like the Prayer Rally for the Lowcountry Franklin Graham Festival are held here. The place is also rented to schools and colleges for conducting rehearsals and small events.
