Once almost strictly Italian, it is now dotted with hookah lounges and Chinese restaurants. However, it is still mainly the Italian neighborhood of Providence and lovingly referred to as Federal Hill. There are numerous Italian restaurants, with outdoor dining, weather permitting, Italian markets, specialty shops and bakeries. There is a warm and welcoming feeling walking Atwells Ave. from the LaPigna (pine cone) all along the street with Italian flags and Italian music playing. In warm weather it is really festive with most restaurants offering outdoor dining especially De Pasquale Square. The annual Columbus Day parade winds its way thru the streets. It can be crowded and parking may be an issue. Walk over the freeway from the Hilton Hotel and you will be there.

This street is the heart and soul of the Italian atmosphere in Providence. It is full of Italian stores, restaurants, spas, etc. It is a pleasure to walk through. It is centraly located, being only a ten minute drive from the Providence Center.

I love this area! For as long as I can remember, I would sometimes visit this place with friends and family. Most of the visits were for the restaurants, and some are better than others.

Atwells Avenue is the main street in the Federal Hill Italian neighborhood and it is lined with a large number of international restaurants, including several very good Italian one. There are bars, coffee shops, Italian specialty groceries, and shops. It is definitely a place to visit when in Providence and most of the restaurants provide very good food in general.
