New Cathedral Cemetery, established on 1871, is the final resting place for over 110,000 souls. The name New derives from the fact that it was preceded by two earlier locations not far from the Mount Vernon area. The well-maintained cemetery gracefully occupies over 125 acres of rolling hills. A peaceful stream flows through the property. The statuary provides an artfully designed landscape. From the highest point, one can see the skyline of Baltimore. Some of the older gravestones indicate internments that were moved from the earlier sites. There are special sections for different religious orders. The sections are designated by letters of the alphabet, which enabled us to locate a friend's parents' grave as she had asked us to do. Modern and traditional mausoleums are found throughout the grounds. Birds, deer, and wildflowers made the visit more pleasant.
