Peter Kern Library Library ·$$

The Peter Kern Library, located inside the Oliver Hotel, is a world-class speakeasy. The bar is located behind the receptionist desk in the hotel lobby. Upon enterting the bar, guests are made to feel like they've stepped back into the 1920s. Under the guise of library, this secretive bar has beautiful touches, like the drink menus being hidden inside old encyclopedias, that make the whole experience seem authentic. The cocktails are excellent and are all named for famous fictional characters. Patrons can sip on these exquisite drinks while sitting under the watchful eyes of Peter Kern himself - his portrait hangs overlooking the bar.

We have been to the Peter Kern library five or six times, and we have always counted it one of the best cocktail bars in the country. The last few times we’ve gone, however, we have been extremely disappointed (see our review for July 2026). This last visit was by far the worst. We arrived an hour and a half before closing, and at the door we were told they were on the last call. The lighting was definitely last call lighting as it was very bright. We were told by the server that they’d have time to make one round, but that would be it, and he waited for our order before we had a a chance to look over the menu. We ordered the first two things, which weren’t what we wanted at all and he took up the menus and left. Meanwhile, a huge party came in were seated next to us very sloppily dressed. and very loud. The same server greeted them brought them Waters and menus. He put down our drinks and took their orders, chatting with them at a leisurely pace. We tried to save her our drinks, as they were the only ones we were told we could order, and in the meantime, the large, loud sloppily dressed party were able to have two rounds. We were ready to pay our check and the waiter came around and said you’re only having one round? We had been told twice we could only have one round and then he was pretty rude about us not ordering another. The other party was going strong while we paid the check and left. This used to be a really cool place with the small couches, dim, lighting and steam punk vibe. The servers were knowledgeable and encouraged you to try new things. Now it’s loud bright, brash, uncouth, rude, and not knowledgeable about spirits or fun in anyway. We usually stay at the Oliver on a yearly road trip, but because of our experience here, we will rethink our entire hotel stays in the future.

Love this place. Cozy speakeasy bar with REAL bartender who knows how to make real, traditional cocktails ! Perfect for couples, business, 2-3 friends, the special events they sponsor. Great finish to a night downtown. Inside Hotel Oliver Warning: small, limited entry due to capacity.

Very slow service. Drinks expensive. Trying to get a check was painful. Many other options to enjoy a drink.. drink was just ok.

Yes, you walk down an alley and look for the red light bulb outside a back door to a quaint speakeasy bar. It is decorated just as you would expect: leather seating, small tables, dark painted wall walls, and low lighting. You can also enter by walking through the main entrance of the Oliver Hotel. There is a wall that is decorated with pictures that slides on a track to enter. The few staff that working were very friendly and offered suggestions on their favorite drinks. It was a very fun and unique experience.

Great little bar behind the lobby of The Oliver Hotel. Bourbon selection was top notch and so were the cocktails. Quant and cozy.
