Arkansas State Capitol
Arkansas State Capitol Building ·$

The official seat of the Arkansas state government, the Arkansas State Capitol gleams brightly with a pristine white facade. Awash in semblances of striking Neoclassical style, this palatial building sits atop Capitol Hill and is fronted by rolling verdant lawns. However, history has it that Arkansas State Capitol's design was originally intended to be the Montana State Capitol after a competition was held to find a new design. However, the Montana capitol was never built, and the architect brought his design to Arkansas instead. The rest is history. The very place where Bill Clinton governed before taking up President-ship, the Capitol is solemnly crafted using Arkansas limestone. Sitting under a monumental dome, the capitol today is complete with exhibits illustrating the state's long-standing history, culture, traditions, and governance. The capitol is an incandescent canopy during Christmas, where a towering tree graces the rotunda while a string of lights bedecks its outsides. Having been used in plenty of films, the Arkansas State Capitol is truly the crowning glory of Little Rock.

Highly recommend doing the guided tour. Trevor is a terrific guide and made sure we had a great time and learned so many interesting things about Arkansas history and the building itself. Little Rock is a great place to visit but your visit isn’t complete without adding a tour of the Arkansas State Capitol to your plans.

The Arkansas Capital is a generic state capital building with a large dome and some elaborate carvings and the usual government offices. It’s nothing remarkable, but everyone there was very friendly and welcoming from the guards to the visitor desk to the individual departments. I was able to see the senate room, the lavish governor’s reception room and the vault inside the treasury, where they take your photo holding all of Arkansas’s cash: $600,000 when I was there. This was unique, I will concede.

Both my husband and I were born and raised in Arkansas, but neither of us had ever toured the state capitol building -- until we found ourselves with some time to kill while back in the state visiting relatives. The building is beautiful and elegant and on the day we visited, it was very quiet. We only saw a few other visitors. We did a self-guided tour while awaiting a guided one. Our guide, Nancy Martinsen, led us around the elaborate structure while telling us all about how it came to be built where it was and by who. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit inside and then went outside to look at the Little Rock Nine monument located on the capitol grounds. Everyone we encountered was very friendly and welcoming.

As a proud brother of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., visiting the Arkansas State Capitol during the official proclamation of Iota Phi Theta Day on March 13th, 2025, was an unforgettable experience. The building’s grandeur matched the historic moment as we stood in the very halls where our contributions to public service and civic leadership were recognized by the Arkansas Senate. From the stunning architecture to the welcoming atmosphere of the Capitol staff, everything about this visit affirmed why this place stands as a true symbol of democracy in action. Watching our fraternity’s legacy honored in such a powerful and public way—especially alongside esteemed brothers like Brother Dr. D’Andre Jones, Brother Jaylen Smith, and Brother Lioneld Jordan—was inspiring and humbling. For anyone passionate about leadership, history, or the impact of Black Greek life in shaping our communities, this is more than a tourist attraction—it’s a place where legacy is acknowledged and the future is inspired.Highly recommend visiting, especially if you’re a fellow Greek, civic leader, or advocate for change.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and our tour guide (Nancy) was fabulous. The building is an architectural gem designed by a noted architect of the early 20th Century. We also got to hear and speak at length with a sitting State Senator but you may or may not be as lucky when you show up. A highlight of the tour was seeing the old-fashioned State treasury vault where they let you hold and take pictures with an actual stack of hundred dollar bills worth $600,000. It was fun even for our group of adults but seems like it would be great for kids. If you are visiting Little Rock and have some free time, be sure to check it out.
