If you've been to Boulder you've probably seen the cool looking building up on the mesa just below the flatirons. Its the National Center for Atmospheric Research ( NCAR) and its free and very interesting. The building itself is an architectural marvel designed by world renowned architect I.M. Pei. It meshes so well in its environment and just walking around it is a treat in itself. The free climatological museum is very interesting especially if you are into weather. There is also a fun short interpretive walk just outside the building along the mesa with incredible views at every turn and informative displays about weather and climate features to enhance your experience. And...if you walk to walk further, they have a large parking lot so this is an excellent starting and ending point for longer hikes into the flatirons or to the peaks of the surrounding mountains. Plus, you've got a bathroom and water source at the beginning and end of your hike!

This was one of our fave activities on our week vacation to the area. The grounds themselves make the trek worth it - it is just stunningly gorgeous. The exhibits were informative and they had some fun hands on elements. We enjoyed the videos they had available in the theater and the fact that you can visit the library (nerdy, I know). I wish we would have been able to make it to one of the noon guided tours but we went on a Thursday. Definitely recommend for folks who enjoy science, older kids, and anyone who wants to spend some time walking around the grounds!

We’ve never heard of NCAR but decided to drop in for a Wednesday noon tour. The group was fairly large - around 25 people. Many interesting topics were covered including how weather is forecasted using supercomputers and how scientists are able to map out the planet’s temperature historically by drilling thousands of feet into polar ice. Our guide was excellent and able to answer all the questions thrown her way. This center is also a great starting place for students interested in this field. It ties the academic with the real-world application.

Went in early May when traveling between Denver and Boulder. Did the 12 to 1 tour. Learned about research between doing at facility. Worth a quick stop if in area.
