Erected as a memorial to the University President, Marion Leroy Burton, in 1936, the Burton Memorial Tower is home to one of the world's heaviest carillons. Composed of 53 bells, weighing a total of 43 tons, the carillon is the centerpiece of the lofty tower. The tower itself is a curious blend of architectural styles, built upon a design envisaged by Albert Kahn, melding together aspects typical of the Art Deco and Art Moderne styles of architecture. The construction of a bell tower was first suggested as an apt homage to President Burton soon after his death in 1925. The site beside the Hill Auditorium was chosen so that the tower could serve the dual purpose of a memorial and an academic building for the school of music, thus better employing the university's funds. The tower is home to the classrooms of the university's music school and also houses various educational offices.
