The California Museum offers the history of the state in a dazzling array of high-tech, multimedia displays and exhibits. The museum makes the subject of history an entertaining treat for the entire family. It uses interactive displays (including holograms) to depict the "People, Place, Politics, and Promise of California" in its four main galleries. A highlight of the museum is the display of the original California Constitution.

tripadvisorWe visited the museum to see a single exhibit (Kokoro: The Story of Sacramento’s Lost Japantown) but ended up staying because the museum had so much to offer. The Kokoro exhibit was well done and quite extensive. We learned so much. We also learned much from the other exhibits too. Thanks!!
MoreI have visited state museums in 40 different states and I must say I was extremely disappointed in California's state museum. California is a huge state with so much diversity and a variety of topics could have been presented in this museum, but unfortunately this museum was extremely lacking. I did enjoy the exhibits regarding the Japanese and Chinese. The exhibit on the Spanish missions was just okay. The Gold Rush exhibit was not very informative. The worst part of the museum was the top floor. If you are not interested in Woke topics then skip that floor. I wish I would have saved my time and money by visiting the Sacramento History Museum or the state Capitol. I do not recommend this museum.
MoreCame across the museum unexpectedly while walking around the Capitol and decided to visit—what a fun experience! The docents at the front desk give a great introduction to the museum and the best exhibits to visit. As a political science student I loved the exhibit on the history of activism in California, it had tons of great hands-on activities like video screens and even a card game. The Chinese-American exhibit is gorgeous and we both loved pointing out the people we recognized in the California Hall of Fame. It’s a great museum to visit with friends and enjoy the interactive elements together!
MoreExhibit of Pilipino experience in California has a surprising immediacy, as the integration of Pilipino immigrants into the California economy as well as the history of the state and the US military continues to impact present day California. The exhibit is beautifully presented and extensively documented — compellingly illustrated and annotated.
MoreExcellent exhibits. So much to learn. Great hands on. We spent 2 hours and it wasn't enough time. The Women Landmark Moments was inspirational. Recycle exhibit a great reminder of our responsibility to our planet. Give yourself plenty of time to absorb this experience.
