Situated in the funky but hip environment of Fourth Avenue, this bookstore specializes in books by and for women, inspired by the tradition of the ancient Greek heroine who lent her name to the establishment. Feminist essays, women's studies and lesbian material are represented along with the works of the famous women writers of all ages and nationalities. Recently, the store has expanded to include cards, calendars, jewelry and gifts; but books are still at the core of the business.

tripadvisorCame here many years ago when I was in town, and liked this bookstore. In the years since, the store has changed. First off, I had a hard time finding any coherence to the store's organization. I kept walking around looking for certain sections. Two women stood behind the counter chatting with one another, unaware of their customers. I took a glance at what I would call global studies ... and like most of the sections (sparse shelves ) it seemed like an ideological bent to the topic. I don't even really mind that, but the best of the books in that genre of lefty thought could not be found?!? They did have an extensive card and gift section. If I had been looking for such things, I would have been happy. Won't be back.
MoreThis is a fantastic independent bookstore in Tucson. After investigating another prior, Antigone Books is a standout bookstore and well worth the trip to Historic Fourth Avenue. It is likely to be the highlight of your time.
MoreClearly the best independent bookstore in Tucson featuring local authors and a nice children's section, Antigone Books is located on 4th Avenue. There is very limited free parking in a lot near the store with metered parking on the street. The store also features a variety of other gift items. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Antigone is worth visiting if nearby or to seek out if you just need a fix of a good local bookstore experience.
