tripadvisorThis was a very nice area to visit! Nice walking area and a lot to see and walk around and enjoy. Must visit.
MoreThis used to be a nice place to bring your lunch but not anymore. The city has taken just about all the tables and chairs away, so there's no longer anywhere to sit and eat or relax. There is also a much bigger increase of panhandling going on which makes it a place to avoid now. Kinds like much of downtown Roanoke. Too many panhandlers.
MoreIt's a nice spot for lunch if you don't mind that people around you are allowed to smoke. Seating is usually far enough away that it might not bother you though. It is an outdoor spot with some shade and a few trash cans. No where for people to put their cigarette butts though so they usually end up on the ground around the seating areas. Usually squirrels and birds are around. Benches and tables are available.
MoreThe plaza is an excellent idea...a downtown oasis in an urban environment. Unfortunately the area is poorly maintained and often a hang our for aggressive panhandlers. The Ginko trees are a poor choice and smelly and the entire area looks unkemp. Good idea but poor execution/maintenance.
MoreCentury Park Plaza serves as a delight walk from Kirk Ave. - between Market St. and S. Jefferson St. - to Church St. and the old Firehouse #. Despite a lack of maintenance at times - scattered cigarette butts, food wrappers - this is one of my favorite Roanoke places. It has been skillfully designed and landscaped with plants suitable for the location. There columnar ginkgo trees - both male and female - that display light green color in the spring and summer and light-capturing yellow in the autumn. Wisteria vines draped over trellises play peek-a-boo with the sides of neighboring buildings. Fountains consisting of small jets, metal arches made of metal, and containers of summer annuals (coleus) made great entrance introductions. Seven colorfully sculptured columns arrayed along both sides of the walkway symbolize the cultures of Roanoke's sister cities. Dedicated in 2004, the columns are part of Roanoke City's public art collection. A stunning overhead view can be had by climbing to the upper stories of the Campbell Ave parking garage and looking south. There is a pedestrian entrance to the garage from Kirk Ave. opposite the enternace to the Plaza.
