Virginian Railway Station is located on the corner of Jefferson Street and was built in 1909. It is one of the only existing examples of the Spanish Revival style architecture in Virginia. It served as a railway station for over 45 years. A fire in 2001 almost destroyed the building. The station is being restored and will be put to some good use.
Standing atop Roanoke's Mill Mountain, the Roanoke Star is the largest illuminated star to have been created by man. Built in 1949 to inaugurate the year's Christmas festivities, the star soon became a permanent attraction, and has been responsible for giving Roanoke the title of 'Star City of the South'. Standing tall at a height of 1045 feet (318.52 meters), the star is visible from high above the city.
