Upstairs & Looking Down in the gallery
Armory Center for the Arts Art Museum ·$$

This is certainly one of the more unique art galleries in Southern California. In addition to hosting many excellent exhibitions each year, it offers a bevy of truly interactive activities. Shows present artists at every level, including professionals, amateurs and especially students. Friday nights are particularly exciting, featuring lectures, artist appearances and other presentations. A recent exhibition entitled 'PROS & PROteges' examined how some local artists have impacted the creative lives of their pupils. The center also offers classes and studios to the public.

In Old Town, it exhibits local artists work. A place to contemplate just what was the artist thinking?

I had no idea about this place until I read about it in a guide to all the shows in and around Los Angeles for Pacific Standard a Time. The armory is hosting through January 21 a show called Below the Underground: Renegade Art and Action in 1990s Mexico. It's not a pretty show, and much of the art here was created by artists not classically trained, but those who have used their savvy to create what will create reaction from the viewer. Some of a sexual nature were behind a wall and you were asked to only enter at your discretion. Honestly, I wasn't inspired by much in the show. The Armory provides a cool alternative space for exhibitions. It was quiet when I was there. One visitor (me) and a man behind the desk who I think was part guard, part information desk. The admission is free. Street parking and metered parking in the area. It appears the Armory also is a place where people sign up for art classes. Now that is a cool thing for those living in Pasadena.
