Endowed by industrialist, financier, and philanthropist Norton Simon (1907-1993), the Norton Simon Museum that bears his name is an extraordinary window into art and antiquities. This museum houses the single largest collection of art assembled by one man. Here, you will find art spanning several centuries and exhibited both in the galleries and in the charming gardens. Simon collected years' worth of artworks from the Indian subcontinent, as well as works from Tibet, Nepal, and Cambodia. This is certainly one of the more unique art galleries in Southern California. In addition to hosting many excellent exhibitions each year, it offers a bevy of truly interactive activities. Shows present artists at every level, including professionals, amateurs and especially students. Friday nights are particularly exciting, featuring lectures, artist appearances and other presentations. A recent exhibition entitled 'PROS & PROteges' examined how some local artists have impacted the creative lives of their pupils. The center also offers classes and studios to the public.
Atkins Art Studios is located in Pasadena, CA and is run by Victor and Diana Atkins. The studio hosts beginner and intermediate painting classes, figure drawing sessions, children's art workshops and wine and paint nights. Both Victor and Diana are professionally trained artists with a life time of experience. Their mission is to equip and release each student into their unique creative expression.
This replica of a 17th century Finnish smokehouse was erected on the grounds of the Feynes Mansion, once the home of the Finnish Consulate. At the consulate, Y.A. Paloheimo gathered an impressive collection of antiquities from his homeland, many of which are on display here. The visiting hours are very limited, so be sure to carefully plan a trip here. Still, it is most definitely worth the effort. The admission price for Finnish Folk Art Museum includes entry to the Pasadena Historical Museum located in the adjacent Feynes Mansion.
