tripadvisorThis is a memorial that paid tribute to a tragic event long forgotten especially for travellers from out of state.
MoreThis is a monument to the memory of firefighters that lost their life fighting a huge fire at the Hotel Vendome on Commonwealth Avenue in the early 70's.This monument is one of a kind and worth visiting if in the Back Bay.
MoreFirst responders give of themselves every day. In recent years we've become comfortable with calling these people heroes. Not so long ago, heroism wasn't part of our everyday lives. When you visit this quiet unassuming monument that recognizes the loss of 9 firefighters, consider that it took 25 years for the City of Boston to acknowledge the sacrifice of those men and their families. You'll see dogwalkers and joggers go by without a second thought. The monument is a reminder that, for some, June 17 1972 is a day that never ended. The Vendome has been rebuilt, so it's hard to imagine the flames of that forgotten day and the rubble of bricks and lives left in it's wake. Despite it's size, the memorial is a simple and powerful testament to those men who quietly and faithfully gave their lives to service and to their surviving brethren who taught this city the meaning of the words Never Forget.
MoreA modest but powerful memorial to a tragic event set in the middle of the Commonwealth, a strip of park in the middle of Boston that takes a moment out of a busy city to acknowledge the fallen but not forgotten.
MoreSituated on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall between Dartmouth and Clarendon Streets is a contemporary style monument called the Vendrome Firefighters' Memorial, which was installed here in 1987 in memory of the 9 firefighters who lost their lives fighting the fire at nearby Vendrome Hotel in 1972. This bronze sculpture, created by Ted Clausen and Peter White, is a crescent shaped structure which hugs the ground. It is rough on the outside yet smooth on the inside where there are engravings detailing the events of the fire and providing information regarding those who lost their lives. In touching fashion, a fireman's hat and jacket is draped over the top of the memorial. Overall, it is a nicely designed memorial and something worth spending a few minutes to see if you intend to include the Commonwealth Ave. Mall during your sightseeing in Boston.
