Situated on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall between Exeter and Fairfield Streets is a nice statue of Bostonian Samuel Eliot Morison, who is casually seated upon a large jagged granite rock. Morison was a avid sailor, Harvard professor who was a Pulitzer prize recipient and considered American's foremost navel historian. However, this sculpture is a simple sailor, resting upon a rock instead of the typical stately pose standing upon a pedestal, which is so often the form of monuments to historical figures. We enjoyed the simplicity of the Morison Statue and liked seeing this monument against the coloured leaves of the nearby trees during our mid-autumn visit. This made for nice photos of the statue and mall. Overall, we found this to be a nice monument, one of the more memorable on the Commonwealth Mall in Boston.
