We make it a point to visit Old Mission Santa Barbara almost every single time we are in the area, and it easily stands as one of our absolute favorite California missions, arguably second only to the spectacular Mission San Juan Capistrano. What truly sets this particular mission apart is its majestic, perched location. Sitting gracefully on a high hill, it offers an incredible, sweeping view that stretches all the way out to the Pacific Ocean, framed by beautifully manicured front lawns. ​Compared to some of the larger mission complexes, Santa Barbara is much more compact, making the self-guided tour incredibly manageable. Despite its smaller physical footprint, it is packed with rich history and beautifully preserved exhibits. The absolute highlight of the indoor collection is the historic altarpiece and its original 18th-century Mexican devotional paintings. Directly adjacent to the main church, you can wander through the quiet, shaded sacred garden and the historic cemetery, which contains the prominent, peaceful stone crypts of early Franciscan friars and influential local families.​Pro Tip: Just like many of the historic California missions, Old Mission Santa Barbara is an active, working parish church. Access to the historic main church sanctuary can be restricted or completely closed to tourists during daily mass times, weddings, or funerals. Be sure to check their parish schedule online before you arrive so you can plan your walk through without any friction.

Enjoyed going to the Santa Barbara mission on Sunday afternoon. Loved the lovely flowers of the mission ground. Going to Mission church was a very religious experience with many paintings showing the trials of Jesus Christ. Beautiful Ficus tree brought to mission from Australia. Acorn Woodpeckers busy in the many palm trees! Learned how Spanish forcibly transported all the Chumash tribes to work at the mission. Extraordinary museum explaining the history of the mission!

Santa Barbara is known as the Queen of the Missions, and it's easy to see why. The current church dates back to 1820, and its stone facade is dominated by twin bell towers and pink accents. The interior of the church is richly polychrome, with lustrous paintings, including a very rare depiction of the trinity as three identical male figures, a style that was later condemned by Pope Benedict XIV.Entry is a bit expensive for a mission ($17), but the included audio tour provides a lot of nice commentary. While the museum is small, it includes a very interesting exhibit on the Chumash people.Overall, this is a unique and beautiful mission well worth a visit and its title of Queen.

Old Mission Santa Barbara is a beautiful slice of California history. The twin bell towers and serene chapel are stunning, and the gardens are perfect for a peaceful stroll. The museum and friendly staff make the visit both educational and memorable. A must-see in Santa Barbara!
